Personal Stories

Jude

Jude is a soft spoken young man who is currently working as a peer support worker for people with mental illness. Hard to imagine since Jude was very ill in 1996 when he attempted suicide due to undiagnosed depression. Since then, he has received a proper diagnosis for his illness and is in recovery.

Jude visits the CRC to interact with other people and staff who understand what it means to live with depression. Jude provides interesting insight into the demographics of mental health when he tells the story of sharing his recovery hospital room with two Doctors and a policeman who were also recovering from depression.

Anne

Anne is a 71 year old woman who visits the Community Resource Centre daily. Anne tells her story of mental illness and how it started with postpartum depression and schizophrenia. Her illness went undiagnosed and she suffered alone, unsure of what to do.

Fortunately, help was received through the Vancouver Mental Health Team and proper medical attention was provided. Anne says she comes to the MPA Community Resource Centre because the staff understand her illness; they also provide compassionate and professional assistance when she visits for coffee and company.
